Owen Smith is making the most of his retirement. After 20 years in public education, the former college president has turned his attention toward Colorado Boys Ranch. "Retirement has provided me with the opportunity to not only spend time with family and friends," says Owen, "but it allows for constructive use of time that will hopefully benefit some of these kids who really need it." Owen is one of 10 men and women who serve on the Colorado Boys Ranch board of directors. Although they represent a wide range of backgrounds and expertise, they all share a deep appreciation for the Ranch's role in caring for troubled youth. Owen's educational career began as a high school physics teacher and coach. Hard work and determination eventually propelled him to the top spot in the Community Colleges of Denver System where, as president, Owen oversaw Red Rocks Community College, Front Range Community College and the Community College of Denver. He retired in 1986. Long-time friend and fellow board member Stuart Boulter introduced Owen to the Boys Ranch a few years ago. Owen was impressed by the treatment program and taken aback by the severity of abuse and array of handicaps the young residents were struggling to overcome.
Due to his many successes in the educational arena, Owen has been invited to serve on other boards, including the YMCA, United Way and Kiwanas Club. He and Mary, his wife of 23 years, live in Breckenridge, Colo. They have four grown children, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. |
